The Drawing Works
Art Studio and Press
North Beach, San Francisco, CA
From classes, workshops, and exhibits, The Drawing Works fulfilled a lifetime dream of both Matthew and I to open up an atelier. Situated in San Francisco's historic North Beach neighborhood, this two-year project served as an active creative hub for a diverse cross-section of the city. We hosted local schools for hands-on workshops, introducing students to the joy of printmaking, drawing, painting and mixed-media. Adult & Community Education: We designed and taught dedicated classes and technical workshops for adults. Exhibits & Dialogue: Beyond a working studio, the atelier functioned as an exhibition space, hosting regional showcases, fostering cultural dialogue in the neighborhood.
Our Press
Our Whelan XPress etching press featured a unique design where the drum moves back and forth over a stationary bed. This saved considerable workspace compared to traditional presses where the heavy bed extends outwards into the room. This press allowed even our youngest artists to easily pull their own prints.

The evening the press arrived, weeks before opening day of the Drawing Works.
